A Fulton County motorist was charged Wednesday with killing Jack Snook who had recently returned from duty in Iraq during a predawn argument on the streets of downtown Atlanta.
Charles Anthony Key, 23, surrendered early Wednesday morning at his Ninas Trace home south of Cascade Road, said Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley.
Snook, a Marine, returned home about a month ago after a tour of duty in Iraq.
According to the police report, Snook's wife, Cara, was standing behind her husband when he was shot and died in her arms.
U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Jack R. Snook had just returned to his home in Cumming, Georgia to devote more time to his seven-year-old daughter Mallory. He had been a star high school football player and track star at North Forsyth High School and was elected Athlete of the Year. He also played football at Georgia Southern University.
He was a decorated veteran of Iraqi Freedom involved in intense combat in the drive to liberate Baghdad. He served his country well in combat but also in the cause of peace. He was awarded the Humanitarian Ribbon for his work in building schools and hospitals in Djibouti, Africa. He had recently left the Marine Corps to begin training as an EMT / Firefighter in his desire to help his community and save the lives of his fellow Americans.
He was buried with full military honors on April 7 surrounded by loving friends, family, and fellow Marines.
